Starlight is the companion cat of a well-known animal communicator and was introduced to me as a masterful teacher who was interested in sharing wisdom with many people. It sounded like an interesting connection, so I thought I would try! "Hi Starlight, do you feel like having a chat?" I asked. She looked around as a shopkeep does when someone walks through the door and said, "Ooh, I have a customer! Step into my office." "Office?" I teased. "Isn't that kind of formal for just a talk?" "That depends on your perception of an office. Some might be in a building, but some might be in a field. But you're not here to split hairs, are you?" "No, I'm here to practice, to get to know you, and maybe ask your advice on a few things." "The doctor is in," she said. I faltered, suddenly anxious about having a conversation with a master teacher like Starlight, and cat companion to another master teacher human. "How do I do this, Starlight?" I was losing focus. "Just stop. Breathe. You've done this with dozens of other animals. I'm just one more," she said gently. "But I often feel like a fraud, like I'm making all these conversations up," I confessed. With a little chuckle, she said, "You're a good writer, but not even on your best days would you have created conversations that flowed with this ease. So where is it all coming from?" "I don't really know," I wondered to her. "Sometimes I just think it's based on information that I already have in my head somewhere or that my higher self knows. Then it just…" I paused, trying to finish the thought. "See how hard it is to just make something up?" she said. "Our imaginations are powerful places, powered by inspiration, fueled by fact and fiction, with unlimited potential to create. But creating is the same as making something up. And making something up is the same as putting various elements together. And putting various elements together is the same as constructing a sentence, then another, then another, and then you have a conversation. You've simply taken what is there — an element that exists — and put it into your conversation. You add new creations, your own responses and contributions to the interchange. But these things you hear me saying are not from you. I'll take the credit, thank you very much!" Delving into the specifics of communicating."Okay, that sounds right. Thank you, Starlight," I answered. "But what about asking questions of an animal to try to get specific answers. It makes a lot of learners nervous because it feels so easy to get it wrong and it can be compared to others who are getting their own answers to those questions." "Those to whom you ask questions are not machines, spitting out computerized answers that are identical each time," Starlight began explaining. "They are beings, whether in physical or non, who respond to the person — to the personality, the energy, the interest. If a child asked you a question, the same question as one adult who was interested in details and another adult who simply wanted to hear himself talk, would you give the same answers to all three? Would they be able to compare notes later and say, 'Yes, we all got the same thing.'?" "I would think they would have similar answers, at least similar content, just said differently and with a slightly different delivery and focus," I answered. "Okay, and now switch positions. As the person listening to the answer — any one of those people mentioned — would you hear the answer in the same way? No, you would be swayed by your level of understanding, possibly some of your past experiences that would help you interpret in a particular way, and even your interest level and focus. That guy who's focused on himself much of the time is probably going to hear the answer as it relates to him and his need to feel good and boost his ego. That means he will discard some of the intent and meaning in exchange for what he wants to hear or expects to hear." "That makes sense," I said. "But what if I really am listening with integrity and don't hear the details or specifics that should be there?" "You really are putting the pressure on, do you know? You can't be in charge of all sides of a conversation, just yours. If the channel is clear on both sides, you will get your answers. There's always room for interference, but that comes with the territory." "Does this interference happen from animal to animal as well?" "It can happen, maybe not as commonly or for the same reasons, but it does. " "And in non-physical or spirit form? Can this also happen then?" "The energy is purer and more direct, but it's still energy that is always forming and reforming, changing, adapting, and therefore, susceptible to 'things' happening." "Uhhh," I grunted. "It's complicated and still nothing proves that this is all real," I lamented. Echo makes an entrance."The universe is indeed a complicated place. And yet so simple. Hey — hop on. Let's clear your head." Suddenly, Starlight was not a cat, but a horse. I think it was Echo, his previous incarnation. Without thinking too much, I hopped on and Echo took off at full speed through a field. I could feel the speed, the air whooshing against me, the rhythm of the gallop like a washing machine cycle, slowly loosening things up, shaking free the complexity of it all. Starlight as Echo slowed down to a saunter. "You know, each time I do that with someone, they experience it differently, even though I do it the same way. One person might focus on the scenery blurring by, the wind in his hair; another might be caught up in the adrenaline, a racing heart, hanging on for dear life; and still another might try to become one with me as we race ahead, experiencing what I feel. Is an interaction, a conversation between two beings, any different?" "No, I guess not," I admitted. "And what of this legendary playfulness you are known to have, Starlight?" I had been wondering this the whole time. I often encounter animals with a flare for humor and sense of lightheartedness. But so far, Starlight was pretty serious. Instantly, Starlight was back in cat form. I guess I brought her back simply by addressing her that way and I hoped it wasn't rude. "I can swing with the best of them," said Starlight. "But sometimes a serious mood requires serious answers. You know, a time and place for everything?" I know Starlight is female, but I never really felt the energy as female — or male for that matter. It was just "a being." "I didn't want to add to your distress over this subject," she continued. "Good, straightforward answers can work wonders sometimes. So can humor. Here, pull my finger…" She was trying out the old classic "grandpa" joke. She looked down at her outstretched paw, demonstrating clearly that a finger joke wouldn't work with a cat body and then said, "I have no idea where that joke goes from here anyway!" I smiled, at little more at ease, but still unsure, wondering, doubtful. I hoped I wouldn't alway be, that at some point I will know definitively that something is real. "Thank you Starlight — and Echo. I appreciate your wisdom." She blinked "You're welcome." Her look was compassionate, as if she could see what I was going through and was wishing me well. This is the first of six conversations I had with Starlight. You can read the next conversation with her here.
