Sometimes, we only understand why we heard what we did much later, when other information or events come up. That's why in the moment, even if we are confused or don't understand, or think what we are hearing couldn't possibly be right because it makes no sense or doesn't seem accurate, learning to trust and accept the information can be a game-changer. I recently had a conversation with a dog in spirit (you can read that conversation here). I wrote down my impressions of this dog, her personality, the way she talked and interacted, and the messages she wanted me to share with her family. I had purposely not looked at any background information before connecting, as I didn't want to color my perceptions. After the conversation, I did look at some of that info and was embarrassed, as the description given by the family was quite different than I seemed to get. So much so, that it almost didn't seem to be the same dog! I guess I really got things wrong and I was hesitant to send the conversation to them. But I did anyway. The response I got back made me feel even worse. You see, the impression I got of the dog was sweet, excited, happy, and with a bright energy. She had shown me how much she enjoyed walks and the park filled with lots of people and activity. Her family informed me that, in fact, they adopted the dog only a couple of years ago and before that it had an extremely rough life of abuse and neglect. Further, she had been blind for her last year, had very low energy, severe hip issues, and preferred to stay quietly at home. Can you see why I thought I really failed? But in writing back to the family, expressing my sadness over the situation (and my failure to portray their dog more accurately) I realized something incredible. I was looking at the dog's situation from a human perspective. I focused on all the pain, the abuse, the health issues, the troubled life, and then the death. What a tragedy of a life! However, an animal's point of view is often much different. It's more in the moment, focused on the good things, the hope in every situation. And that's why I got the conversation I got with this dog! She didn't want me to see or focus on all the bad that had happened, and paint a picture of her as sad and broken, someone to feel sorry for. She wanted me to know the spirit who she was and is: happy, excited, loving, energetic. And she wanted that message to get to her family, to change their sadness over thinking she was a broken, scared, unhappy dog to joy that her spirit was intact — and always was. That she had a wonderful life in the short time she was with them and they never let her down. Do you see what a gift that was? Do you see how the message was delivered through me and how without trust that it was the right information and message from the start, I may never have delivered it? It was a chain of uneasy events that ended with finally understanding the big picture. Trust can get you to these kinds of moments!
