Most cats take their time to warm up to you. Is it shyness, aloofness, or indifference that compels them to wait until the time is right to get close to you or let you get close? Perhaps some of each. But likely it's also your energy. If you are too exuberant, anxious, in-your-face, or stressed they will be nowhere to be found and instead will wait until your energy has calmed down or evened out enough for them to enjoy the experience. But toning down your energy is not just to avoid scaring away the cat, but to clear the way for you to begin sensing how your energy differs from others. Master communicator and pioneer, Penelope Smith, recommends grounding yourself before communicating to improve accuracy and success. "Getting one’s busy thoughts, judgments, evaluations, analysis, and mental projections (all forms of energy) out of the way is essential to open a clear channel to heighten perceptions and to experience subtle energies and feelings," she says. In other words, when you are centered and calm, animals can relax, be themselves, open their hearts, and freely communicate with you. Penelope's method for grounding yourself is simple: Feel your feet firmly on the ground, whether you are inside or out. Lower your focus in your body away from your headspace, down to your heart, belly, or feet. From that solid, calmer space, feel the connection to Mother Earth and the animal you wish to connect to. In this place of pure, uncomplicated connection, magic happens. Just ask a cat!
